The main sewer line runs from your house to either the municipal sewer (in served areas) or your septic tank. When it fails — or gets compromised — you'll notice it throughout the house, not just at one fixture.
Warning signs of a sewer line issue:
- Multiple drains backing up or draining slowly at the same time
- Gurgling sound from the toilet when you run the sink or the washing machine
- Sewage odor in the basement, crawlspace, or in the yard near the line
- Wet patches in the lawn above where the sewer line runs, even without rain
- Frequent main drain clogs that return within weeks of being cleared
- Sewage backing up into the lowest drain in the house — usually the basement floor drain
Any one of these on its own could point to a simpler problem. Multiple symptoms together, or symptoms that keep coming back, usually mean the line needs to be scoped.
-- How We Diagnose Sewer Line Issues
The first step on any suspected sewer line issue is a camera inspection. We push a waterproof camera through the line from the house cleanout and watch the footage on a monitor in real time. You can watch with us if you want to understand what we're looking at.
The camera tells us where the problem is (we get exact footage with depth markers), what type of problem it is, and how severe it is. There's no guessing and no unnecessary digging.
What we find on sewer cameras:
- Root intrusion — roots growing in through pipe joints, ranging from hairline infiltration to dense blockage
- Offset or separated joints — pipes that have shifted at the joint due to ground movement or poor original installation
- Bellied pipe — a section of pipe that has sunk below grade and holds standing water permanently
- Pipe corrosion — especially in older cast iron lines where the interior is significantly deteriorated
- Crushed or collapsed sections — usually from ground movement, heavy traffic above the line, or very old clay tile pipe
- Grease or debris buildup beyond what cable cleaning can fully address

Not every sewer line problem requires tearing up the yard. The right repair depends on what the camera shows.
Cable cleaning and maintenance handles minor root intrusion and soft blockages. We clear the line, scope it to confirm, and recommend a maintenance interval if roots are a recurring issue on the property.
Spot repair involves a small, targeted excavation at the specific point of failure — a separated joint, a collapsed section, a belly. We dig, remove and replace only the damaged section, backfill, and restore. This is the right call when the rest of the line is in good shape.
Full sewer line replacement is the right answer when the pipe is deteriorated along most of its length, when there are multiple problem points, or when an older clay tile or cast iron line has reached the end of its service life. We excavate the full line, install new PVC, inspect, backfill, and restore. It's a bigger job, but it solves the problem for the next 50 years.
Pipe lining (CIPP) is an option in some cases — a resin liner is pulled through the existing pipe and cured in place, creating a new pipe inside the old one without full excavation. We evaluate this case by case. It works well when the host pipe is mostly intact and the liner can bond properly. It's not the right answer for severely damaged or collapsed pipe.

The majority of homes in Suffolk County are on private septic systems rather than municipal sewer. Sewer line work here usually means the line from the house to the septic tank — which is typically 4-inch PVC or cast iron, running 10-30 feet depending on the property.
In towns with municipal sewer — parts of Bay Shore, Babylon, Islip — the line runs from the house to the street connection. These jobs sometimes involve coordination with the town or the Water Reclamation District for the street tap.
Root intrusion is especially common in Suffolk County because of the mature tree coverage in neighborhoods across Huntington, Smithtown, and Northport that have been established for 40-60 years. Job 1: Full sewer line replacement, Huntington. Original clay tile pipe from 1958 had collapsed in two sections. Camera found four additional offset joints leaking. Replaced the full 65-foot run with 4-inch PVC. Coordinated with town for the street connection repair. Job 2: Root intrusion, Smithtown. Oak roots had completely blocked the main line — homeowner had been dealing with monthly backups for two years. Cleared the roots with cable machine, scoped the line, found the pipe was still structurally sound. Set the homeowner up on an annual maintenance clearing to keep ahead of the roots. Standing water visible in a 6-foot section of the line about 40 feet from the house. Excavated, re-graded the trench, relaid the pipe with proper slope. Confirmed 1/4-inch per foot fall on the whole run with the camera after backfill. Job 5: Sewer camera inspection pre-purchase, Port Jefferson. Homebuyers requested a scope before closing. Found significant root intrusion and a crushed section of 4-inch cast iron at the 15-foot mark. Provided a written report with footage. Buyers used the report in price negotiations. Job 6: Sewage odor in yard, Islip Terrace. Camera found a cracked section of pipe 18 inches below grade — sewage was seeping into the surrounding soil. Spot excavation, removed 4 feet of damaged pipe, installed new PVC section with ferncos, restored grade.
